SF is the only place with cable cars in the world - they're unique. in the old days horses pulled trolley cars on tracks in most cities, but they couldn't manage the hills in SF, so a guy invented a drive system with a moving steel cable under the street. the cable car reaches down thru the slot and grabs on and gets pulled along. a trolley has an electric motor and runs from overhead power wires. and san franciscans are proud of the difference - you know how when peecee people say wrong things about Macs? same kind of thing, maybe... best regards, buster karen – i hate to belabor the point, but since i guess you are new to SF, i’ll give you a better explanation.
