Justine and I are currently in Austin, TX shooting for the next installment of our At&t lost in america series. Videos from Anchorage are going to come out any day now.

Second floor of the Cathedral of Junk

One of the highlights of our day was visiting the Cathedral of Junk. This place is absolutely amazing. I could spend all day here looking at all the things that make up this building. Wheels, toys, vacuums, you name it; it’s there. I even saw an old-school Nintendo control. The cathedral is multi-level and there are many little nooks to sit and admire all the junk. He is currently building a wheelchair accessible ramp and a new balcony. Check out this video for a little tour.

In the evening we were part of an Improv show called Stool Pidgeon at Coldtown Theater. I was pretty nervous about being onstage. Fortunately, you can’t see the audience from the stage so it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be.

At the show

Rachel and her roomie Arianna drove for 3+ hours to go to the show. They’re awesome.
Post-show
The day started really early and ended very late. I was exhausted and had a great time.

Black cod in miso
Dennis, a friend and I went to Nobu in New York last month and I’m just processing the photos now. This place is absolutely delicious. Everything we ate was amazing and I highly recommend trying it. Service and drinks were both great. The black cod (pictured) was sweet and savory and melt-in-your-mouth good. The only failure was dessert. We got gelato in wood chip, green tea and black sesame. They were all horrible. The peach soup was decent. Say no to dessert and yes to everything else. The next time I go to LA I really want to try the Nobu down there.

OWC external hard drive

One of my big complaints in the last year has been “I don’t have any hard drive space.” My computer has a 120g hd, but that’s not much since I capture a ton of video. My hd was so full that I started to run into problems. It was really slow, exchange stopped downloading mail, I couldn’t back up my iphone, and I couldn’t put any new media on my computer. It’s been many months and I have tried several solutions, but I nothing worked quite right. Finally I have found a pretty good solution.

Here’s the summary: Buy a few external hard drives (duh! I bought a few of these from OWC based on a recommendation by Tantek), and sync with Super Duper (paid version).

If anyone has any hardware or softare recommendations, or alternate solutions I’d love to hear them. I’m pretty happy with this method right now but it could always be better.

Talk like a pirate day

I tried to find an pirate translator iphone app, but all they had was the silly ayephone. I bought it; it is not worth it. Pocket Pirate is cute and free. I am using this mobile web version for translations, which unfortunately means I cannot talk like a pirate when there’s no network. My favorite word is ‘booty’ and I will be using it liberally today.

Here’s my video on some basics of pirate talk.

Gocar madness

Sep 082008

Way back in January Justine, Coley and I rented gocars and took a little tour of San Francisco. In my hard drive cleaning I found the footage from that awesome experience and made a little movie. We had a ton of fun. The cars are a little dorky and the helmets are silly, but that’s what I loved about it. Near the end of our journey we figured out how to turn on the radio and did a little seated dancing. I almost hit a park car and Justine basically saved us, which was not recorded (fotunately? unfortunately?). I am not a good driver.

I decided to try out Viddler, a video sharing site with time-based comments. Generally I find the popups distracting but I like the idea of being able to pinpoint a part of the movie to comment on. Viddler also supports scrubbing when the video isn’t fully loaded, which means you can jump to an unloaded part of the video, and it’ll download the bits from that point forward. Love it.

Yesterday we drove out where people hike, bike, picnic and all sorts of outdoor activities. I chatted with some people crouched down against the hillside and they showed me the berries that were safe to eat. When I was a kid I ate all kinds of random flowers and plants around my neighborhood. It’s a bit of a miracle that I never got sick.

I found these berries

The berries I picked are crow berries. The nice woman told me that they are great in jams with other berries and that they have a lovely deep color when cooked. They were crunchy and a little tart. They did not have a distinct flavor and were not sweet. I also found some wild blueberries that were mushy in the center and pretty sour. I think I’ll stick to the grocery store variety of those.

I made a video about our hiking adventure.

frayed

I’m really glad that Apple is offering free replacements for mac power adapters. It’s a good thing I didn’t throw them away when they started fraying. I have two that I’m taking to the mac store tomorrow, which means I will then have four power adapters. Although I would rather have the $150 it cost me when I replaced the broken ones.
