I can bake really quickly:

Cupcake baking and frosting on youtube

Normally I don’t use a box mix, but I thought that it would be quicker. The caramel frosting came out a bit runnier than I expected. I halved the recipe, and I don’t think my kitchenaid could properly whip the frosting when there was less of it in the bowl. Next time I will use a hand mixer.

I basically followed the recipe on the box. In general I use local or organic ingredients for all my cooking. In case the recipe in the video is too hard to follow, here are detailed instructions.

Lego Turing Machine on Youtube

This is as geeky as it gets. Behold the awesome power of the Lego Turing Machine. If you don’t know about Turing Machines, you can still enjoy that it is made of Legos. I was really into CS theory in college, so this video provides endless enjoyment for me. I hope they make a sequel for multitape Turing Machines.

In my constant quest for new (to me) produce, I stumbled upon this beauty at Bi-rite.

Watermelon radish

It’s a watermelon radish, and I would never have noticed it if one weren’t sliced in half and displayed at the store. I generally don’t like the sharp flavor of radishes, but these ones were too pretty to pass up. They are surprisingly mild, with only a hint of that radish-y flavor, and rather sweet. It was fantastic on my salad (arugula, tomatoes, cucumber), though I wished that I had one of those fancy ceramic slicers. They would taste much better sliced super-thin. Fortunately, it is not some freaky lab-mutated vegetable; it’s just an heirloom daikon. I hope watermelon radishes become more popular so I can have them more often.

I was at Bi-Rite two days ago and they were still available in case anyone lives locally and wants to try them.

Napa Valley sauces

The Napa Valley Mole Sauce is delicious. It’s bright and peppery, with nice heat and a good balance of salty and sweet flavors. Add this sauce to some veggies with handful of cocoa nibs, and you’ve made a quick, healthy and tasty meal.

With such a pleasant first experience, I had to try another one of their sauces. The Mango & Spices was an utter disaster. It was incredibly tart, didn’t have any trace of mango, and the Caribbean inspired spices were overpowering. I tried to save it with fresh pineapple and honey, but it didn’t help enough. Now I’m afraid to try any of their other products. I think I’ll just stick with the Mole.

Happy sweets and flowers day. Some call it “single awareness day”. Usually I completely ignore this holiday, but I couldn’t resist these adorable Valentines.

I have a few to give away, so if you’d like one subscribe to my youtube channel and send me a note. I’ll try to send them all out by Valentines. Hope you all have a happy one!

Be my valentine!

Seriously, there was absolutely no way for me to resist the cards.

Have you heard of Twestival? Twestival is an event to bring together Twitter communities for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water. The organization helps provide clean water in Africa. You know how you’re not supposed to drink the water in Mexico because you might get diarrhea? Imagine that water a zillion times worse. Now imagine that people drink it, because they have no choice.

San Francisco Twestival

Location: Harlot. 46 Minna Street, The Paradise Lounge, 1501 Folsom Street @ 11th Street, San Francisco, CA
Date: February 12, 2009
Time: 6pm

There are Twestivals around the world, so check out the sidebar on the main site for one near you.

Would you drink this?

I made this video to contribute to Justine’s video. If you want to add your bit to her collaborative video, read the full details on her blog.

And here is her video:

I’m very excited about this event because it executes beautifully on a concept I’ve talked about (and am attempting with BaconCamp): Geeks getting together to help make the world a better place. More than 180 Twestivals are being organized around the world.

The story of Charity:water is inspiring. Billions of people don’t have access to the clean, safe drinking water that is right beneath them, so they don’t have to drink from dirty streams and ponds. Typhoid, Cholera and other water-related diseases devastate communities, who’s medical facilities (if they exists) don’t have the capacity to help all the sick and dying.

The organization helps build and repair water wells in Africa. Weibel met the founder, Scott, a few year ago at Sundance. You can read his story here. I believe we tried to put a yvideo/jumpcut network together for his organization, but it unfortunately never worked out. It’s amazing to see him apply his party promotion skills to promoting Charity:water.

I loooooove commercials. Even though I use Tivo to watch everything, I always rewind to watch commercials that look interesting. Tell a story in 30 seconds. If the story sucks, it’s over quickly. Really good commercials are tight little reflections of our culture & society.

I finally finished watching all the superbowl ads on Yahoo Video (best user experience for watching, despite ads inside ads, imo). Yes I watched every single commercial, and I don’t know who even played in the SuperBowl.

I love the Conan one (embedded below)

Coca cola bugs wins for most impressive cg. It is beautifully done.

I also wanted to note the Audi commercial . It was the most interesting car commercial, and it did a fabulous job of representing several generations of action films.

[on youtube in case you have an iphone]

Which ones did you like best? Leave a comment! I really like those things :)

On an unrelated note, I found out my credit card was fraudulently used to buy $50 worth of buffalo wings. *sigh*

Another Amanda Palmer video. When she sang “I want you, but I don’t need you”, a cover of Momus, the sheep were amusing and distracting. I listened to this song later, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I think most people can relate to it at some point in their lives.

Here is a video of the full song at another show with out the bouncing sheep:

And lyrics under the cut
