Justine and I are currently in Austin, TX shooting for the next installment of our At&t lost in america series. Videos from Anchorage are going to come out any day now.

Second floor of the Cathedral of Junk

One of the highlights of our day was visiting the Cathedral of Junk. This place is absolutely amazing. I could spend all day here looking at all the things that make up this building. Wheels, toys, vacuums, you name it; it’s there. I even saw an old-school Nintendo control. The cathedral is multi-level and there are many little nooks to sit and admire all the junk. He is currently building a wheelchair accessible ramp and a new balcony. Check out this video for a little tour.

In the evening we were part of an Improv show called Stool Pidgeon at Coldtown Theater. I was pretty nervous about being onstage. Fortunately, you can’t see the audience from the stage so it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be.

At the show

Rachel and her roomie Arianna drove for 3+ hours to go to the show. They’re awesome.
Post-show
The day started really early and ended very late. I was exhausted and had a great time.

Black cod in miso
Dennis, a friend and I went to Nobu in New York last month and I’m just processing the photos now. This place is absolutely delicious. Everything we ate was amazing and I highly recommend trying it. Service and drinks were both great. The black cod (pictured) was sweet and savory and melt-in-your-mouth good. The only failure was dessert. We got gelato in wood chip, green tea and black sesame. They were all horrible. The peach soup was decent. Say no to dessert and yes to everything else. The next time I go to LA I really want to try the Nobu down there.

Gocar madness

travel, video Comments Off
Sep 082008

Way back in January Justine, Coley and I rented gocars and took a little tour of San Francisco. In my hard drive cleaning I found the footage from that awesome experience and made a little movie. We had a ton of fun. The cars are a little dorky and the helmets are silly, but that’s what I loved about it. Near the end of our journey we figured out how to turn on the radio and did a little seated dancing. I almost hit a park car and Justine basically saved us, which was not recorded (fotunately? unfortunately?). I am not a good driver.

I decided to try out Viddler, a video sharing site with time-based comments. Generally I find the popups distracting but I like the idea of being able to pinpoint a part of the movie to comment on. Viddler also supports scrubbing when the video isn’t fully loaded, which means you can jump to an unloaded part of the video, and it’ll download the bits from that point forward. Love it.

Yesterday we drove out where people hike, bike, picnic and all sorts of outdoor activities. I chatted with some people crouched down against the hillside and they showed me the berries that were safe to eat. When I was a kid I ate all kinds of random flowers and plants around my neighborhood. It’s a bit of a miracle that I never got sick.

I found these berries

The berries I picked are crow berries. The nice woman told me that they are great in jams with other berries and that they have a lovely deep color when cooked. They were crunchy and a little tart. They did not have a distinct flavor and were not sweet. I also found some wild blueberries that were mushy in the center and pretty sour. I think I’ll stick to the grocery store variety of those.

I made a video about our hiking adventure.

So there’s this old Chinese man that plays this two-stringed instrument in the bay area. I’ve seen him in Berkeley (on campus and outside bart) in downtown SF and Chinatown. It as an erhu, and when he plays it sounds like cats being skinned alive. When I was in New York in may I was lucky enough to hear some music from the erhu (along with another instrument I’m not familiar with). It was quite lovely. Here’s a shaky short video of the musicians. It was very pretty, and such a vast difference from the old Chinese man.

I recently found this clip in one of my cameras. This clip proves that despite all of Dennis’ talk about saving the environment, he secretly wants to destroy it.

Boston is pretty awesome

Lately I’ve been feeling quite restless. I love San Francisco and I’ve lived & studied in the bay area most of my life. Little things about San Francisco that were just flies have become giant attack mosquitoes (cold nights, traffic, tourists getting in the way of where I’m going, etc). I need a little time away so I can come back and appreciate all the wonderful things this place has to offer. So… I’ll be in Boston for 10 days working in a new Y! office. I’m looking forward to the change of pace and expect to get a ton of work done on my current project.

I’ll get to watch Amanda Palmer (of The Dresden Dolls) perform in her home town with the Boston Pop Orchestra. No doubt I’ll be esploder the day of the show. Are there any recommendations for entertainment while I’m there?

Hit my pownce account to hear the D-Dolls’ “Boston” from their new album, “No, Virginia”. (get individual songs)

Bye for now SF.

I loooooove peeps — I have a book on them. My first movie on jumpcut was about peeps. I buy peeps every year just to look at them. They’re so bright and festive and I’m completely obsessed.

Imagine my absolute joy when I found out Leah brought a box to the LA Pownce brunch. The only thing that could be more peep-tastic was Cal demonstrating how to properly eat them.

We met on the internet (except for Rinzable who is Coley’s sister. I think they met in the crib). Though Kevin and I work 100 ft from each other, we chatted online before we spoke in person. Yes, I know that is totally dorky. I met Coley and Faruk on iilwy, which we have all since abandoned.

cupcakes

By the way, I think cupcakes are so awesome, and are bringers of so much joy that I have decided to call them happycakes. Sweet, sweet happy cakes.
